That split the night, and touched the sound of silence

그건 밤을 쪼개고, 침묵의 소리를 건드렸지

And no one dared disturb the sound of silence
아무도 감히 침묵의 소리를 방해하지 못했어 

"Fools, " said I, "You do not know

"바보들" , 난 말했어 "너희는 알지 못해
Silence like a cancer grows

침묵은 암처럼 자라
Hear my words that I might teach you

너희를 가르칠 테니 내 말을 들어 
Take my arms that I might reach you"

너희에게 닿을 수 있도록 내 팔을 잡아" 
But my words, like silent raindrops, fell

하지만 내 말은, 조용한 빗방울처럼 떨어졌어

그리고 침묵의 우물에 메아리쳤어

사람들은 절을 하고 기도를 해 
To the neon god they made

In the words that it was forming

그것이 나타나고 있는 걸 말해줘
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls

그 표지판에는 "예언자들의 말씀이 지하철 벽과 빈민가 홀에 쓰여 있고  ^[각주:4]

4. 벽에 글을 쓰는 것은 구약 성경 예약서 다니엘 5장 5절의 금과 은의 신들을 숭배한 바빌로니아 왕국의 오만한 왕을 이야기 합니다. 갑자기 손이 나타나 궁전 벽에 신비한 메시지를 썻고 다니엘은 그 메시지를 해석하기 위해 나타났는데 그는 하나님이 신성모독으로 인해 왕에게 화가 나 그의 통치를 끝낼 것이라고 설명했습니다. 왕은 그날 밤 살해 당하였고 왕국은 분열됐습니다. [본문으로]
